By the Westport Recreation Auxiliary
Saturday, September 12th marked the grand opening of the new multipurpose court on Brier Island. We could not have asked for a better day—the sun was shining and lots of community members and special guests came out to take part in the celebrations.
We have been fundraising for the past several years to make this dream a reality. Thanks to everyone near and far that have been supporting the auxiliary’s events to make this happen. A big thank you to Kristina Inrig for all of her knowledge on grant applications. Kristina applied for numerous grants on behalf of the auxiliary, and she is a huge reason why we were able to make this multipurpose court happen.
The court celebrations began with President Jessica Thimot welcoming everyone including special guest Municipal Councillor for Digby Neck and Islands Peter Scherer and Community Foundation of Nova Scotia members. Kristina Inrig thanked all of donors for their generous donations to the court and all of the grant applications that we have received. Peter Scherer wrapped up our celebrations with a very touching and heartfelt speech. The multipurpose court project was one of the first projects that Peter was able to support when he became our Municipal Councillor and we are very thankful for all of his support.
Thank you so much to everyone that came out for the grand opening, we are extremely proud to be able to offer this new court on Brier Island for everyone to use, to be active and have fun.
We will continue to fundraise and apply for more grants to finish the court project. We will be installing a fence around the court, a storage building for equipment, signs and eventually a small parking lot.
Keep watching our Facebook page for more details to come on the court progress and upcoming fundraisers.
